What Are Braces & Why Do So Many People Need Them?

Braces are devices that move teeth according to how they’re configured by an orthodontist. People often need braces due to various teeth and mouth issues, many of which are quite common. This is why you’ll meet so many people who have, or have had, braces.

How Do Braces Work?

Braces work by putting light, gradual, continuous pressure on your teeth. Brackets are attached to each tooth with a bonding material and then a thin archwire is connected to each bracket using ligature elastics or “a-ties.”

The pressure placed on the teeth over time by your braces causes the bones surrounding the teeth to adapt and grow to support the new positioning of the teeth. This is how braces result in a long-term correction of the issues you’re facing.

*It is recommended that patients still see their dentist “at least” every 6 months, since often we recommend every 3-4 month cleanings depending on hygiene.

Common Issues We Correct With Braces

Below are common issues that we fix with braces. If you ever have a question about an issue, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Crowding

Crowding is cause by the teeth not having enough room. This can be due to several reasons, including large teeth, small jaws, constricted/narrow jaws, and various combinations of the above. Crowding can make it difficult to keep your teeth and gums clean.

Spacing

Spacing is caused by small teeth, large jaws, and/or missing teeth.

Open Bite

When the top and bottom teeth do not overlap it is called an openbite. This type of bite can impact chewing and may cause a number of unwanted habits, such as tongue thrusting.

Deep Bite

Deep bites are caused by the top and bottom teeth overlapping too much, sometimes causing the bottom teeth to bite into the roof of the mouth.

Protruding Front Teeth

Protruding front teeth can be caused by the front teeth and/or jaw extending too far forward, the lower teeth and/or jaw not extending far enough forward, or a combination of the these. This type of bite can also be caused by habits such as thumb sucking and lip sucking/biting.

Underbite

Underbites are caused by the lower jaw and/or teeth being too far forward, the upper jaw and/or teeth being too far back, or a combination of both. This type of problem can affect chewing and the long term health of your teeth and bite.

Types of Braces & Aligners

Below are the types of braces we offer patients at Integrity Orthodontics. If you’re not sure which treatment option is best for you, we can help you decide at your free initial exam. As soon as you’re ready, fill out the free exam form and we can get you scheduled.

Invisalign / Clear Aligners

Integrity Orthodontics is Certified Invisalign Providers! Invisalign uses a custom-made series of clear, removable, and comfortable aligners to gradually straighten your teeth according to the prescription from the doctors. They are removed for eating, therefore requiring less diet restrictions, and for brushing and flossing, making hygiene easier. Not everyone is a candidate for this type of treatment, but we will be happy to evaluate your orthodontic needs and let you know if Invisalign is an option for you!

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are very similar in design to traditional braces, however they are made from a ceramic material that makes them translucent. This allows them to blend in with your natural tooth color, making them less obvious and more esthetic. Ceramic braces will not discolor or stain during the course of treatment. While ceramic braces are less esthetically obvious, they do require more attention to oral hygiene and diet as they are larger and more brittle than metal braces. For this reason, we use ceramic braces on the top front teeth more than on the bottom teeth.

Metal Braces

Metal braces are the most common type of braces. They are made of high-grade stainless steel and are attached to the front surface of the teeth using special adhesive. Traditional braces require elastics to hold the wire onto the brackets. These elastics come in a variety of colors that allow you to show your personality or support your favorite sports team or school. Silver, gray, and white colored elastics are also available for patients who want a more neutral look.

Frequently Asked Questions About Braces

Does the process of getting braces hurt?

Getting braces is a relatively painless process and doesn’t require any injections. Rest assured, we’ll make sure you’re as comfortable as possible throughout the procedure.

Does wearing braces hurt?

Some people experience minor soreness and aching in the first couple days as they adjust to wearing braces. This will go away, but can come back after adjustment appointments. While over-the-counter pain relievers can be used, they’re rarely needed.

How long will my braces appointment take?
his depends on the type of appointment you are scheduled for.  Certain appointments take longer to complete (like getting braces on or having your braces removed), while others are much shorter (like having your retainers evaluated), however most appointments will be scheduled for around 30-40 minutes for adjustments to your braces.
How long do I need to wear my braces for?

It’s different for each person, but generally you’ll wear your braces anywhere from 6 months to 30 months. We can give you a better estimate once we’re able to evaluate you.

How often will I need to come in for an appointment?

We typically will want to see you once every 4 to 10 weeks while you’re wearing braces, but this is always different depending on the patient.

Note: It is recommended that patients still see their dentist every 6 months for their regular dental cleanings.

Will I need to have any teeth extracted?

If your teeth are severely crowded or if you have impacted teeth, then extraction may be necessary. In the case of younger patients, early treatment may make extraction unnecessary.

Do people with braces have to avoid certain foods?

You’ll need to adjust your diet to avoid foods that can damage braces or become trapped in your braces. For example, we ask patients to avoid things like raw vegetables, hard candy, caramel, taffy, and ice cubes. We’ll give you a complete list at your appointment.

Can I still play sports and my favorite instruments?

Yep! It’s unlikely you’ll need to avoid sports or instruments, though we’ll make sure to review your exact situation and confirm.

Obviously, you’ll want to make sure you wear proper mouthguard protection when participating in sports.

Will I need a retainer when my braces come off?

A retainer is almost always necessary when your braces are taken off. Without a retainer your teeth can quickly shift out of position and then all the time and effort put into treatment will be lost. The retainer protects your new smile!
