The Process of Getting Braces

Getting braces always comes with a lot questions and perhaps some concerns as well. Hopefully this page helps answer those questions and puts you at ease and shows you that braces can be fun and exciting!

Step #1: Get Comfortable

You will be seated in your chair in the treatment area and given the opportunity to ask any questions about what we will doing or how things will be done. Once you are feeling comfortable we will lay you back in the comfy chair and start your journey to a beautiful and healthy smile!

Step #2: Prep Work

First, we’ll place cheek retractors in to keep your cheeks away from your teeth and help keep your teeth dry (which is very important for the braces to stay in place).

Next, your teeth will be cleaned with pumice (a special gritty toothpaste), and etched (using a green gel to prepare the enamel so the braces will stay on).

Finally, a layer of sealant will be placed on your teeth (this also helps the braces stay on your teeth).

** NO SHOTS WILL EVER BE GIVEN IN OUR OFFICE 🙂

Step #3: Get Braced

Once the teeth are prepared, Dr. Adebayo will precisely position the braces on each tooth. Once the brace is in the proper position we use a blue light to cure (dry) the glue and keep the brace in place.

Step #4: Get Wired and “Spirited”

Once the braces are on, the cheek retractors come out and it’s time to pick the color of your “A-ties” – these are used to secure the wire to your new braces and are usually changed at each appointment (so you will have lots of opportunities to try out different color combinations).

A-ties give you the opportunity to show your school spirit, support your favorite sports team, or color coordinate with your favorite outfit(s)!

If you have chosen “clear” or ceramic braces, we will be sure to show you our more discrete options.

Step #5: Care & Maintenance

Home care and oral hygiene instructions will be demonstrated and discussed thoroughly before you leave the office! We take healthy smiles very seriously and want to make sure there are no questions about how to take care of your new braces or what to do if something breaks or feels bothersome to you.

We will also discuss foods to avoid (and give you a list to bring home as a reminder) so that we can minimize breakages!

Finally, you will leave with a goody bag including some home care items, such as a new toothbrush, floss threaders, and wax!

Congratulations – You’ve just started your journey to the smile you’ve always wanted!

There are not enough good things to say about Dr. Moore and staff. They adore my kids and always go above and beyond. They’ve even treated me off hours and just make the experience the easiest and most comfortable. They have worked wonders with my kids. Best ortho hands down.

Frequently Asked Questions About Life With Braces

Does the process of getting braces hurt?

Getting braces is a relatively painless process and doesn’t require any injections. Rest assured, we’ll make sure you’re as comfortable as possible throughout the procedure.

Does wearing braces hurt?

Some people experience minor soreness and aching in the first couple days as they adjust to wearing braces. This will go away, but can come back after adjustment appointments. While over-the-counter pain relievers can be used, they’re rarely needed.

How long will my braces appointment take?

Your content goes here. Edit or remove this text inline or in the module Content settings. You can also style every aspect of this content in the module Design settings and even apply custom CSS to this text in the module Advanced settings.

How long do I need to wear my braces for?

It’s different for each person, but generally you’ll wear your braces anywhere from 6 months to 30 months. We can give you a better estimate once we’re able to evaluate you.

How often will I need to come in for an appointment?

We typically will want to see you once every 4 to 10 weeks while you’re wearing braces, but this is always different depending on the patient.

Will I need to have any teeth extracted?

If your teeth are severely crowded or if you have impacted teeth, then extraction may be necessary. In the case of younger patients, early treatment may make extraction unnecessary.

Do people with braces have to avoid certain foods?

You’ll need to adjust your diet to avoid foods that can damage braces or become trapped in your braces. For example, we ask patients to avoid things like raw vegetables, hard candy, caramel, taffy, and ice cubes. We’ll give you a complete list at your appointment.

Can I still play sports and my favorite instruments?

Yep! It’s unlikely you’ll need to avoid sports or instruments, though we’ll make sure to review your exact situation and confirm.

Obviously, you’ll want to make sure you wear proper mouthguard protection when participating in sports.

Will I need a retainer when my braces come off?

A retainer is almost always necessary when your braces are taken off. Without a retainer your teeth can quickly shift out of position and then all the time and effort put into treatment will be lost. The retainer protects your new smile!

How much do braces cost?

The price is always dependent on the individual and the scope of treatment needed. While braces aren’t a small investment by any means, they’re an important investment and we provide many different financing options to help you afford them.
